General Tso’s Tofu
Ingredients
- Extra Firm Tofu drained, cubed, & pressed
- Corn Starch to coat tofu
- Cooked Rice
- Sautéed Veggies I like broccoli, kale, or snap peas
- Olive Oil
- Chopped Green Onion optional
- Sesame Seeds optional
Sauce Ingredients
- 1/4 Cup Hoisin Sauce
- 1/4 Cup Soy Sauce
- 3 Tbs Sugar I prefer agave or honey
- 3 Tbs Unseasoned Rice Vinegar
- 4 Cloves Garlic minced
- 2 Tbs Ginger sliced or minced
- 2 Tbs Sesame Oil
- 1/2 Tspn Red Pepper Flakes to taste, optional
Instructions
- Cut the tofu into cubes (approx one inch). Use a tofu press or wrap in paper towels or lint free kitchen towels, and gently press out some of the moisture. Set aside to continue drying out, until it’s time to cook.
- Prepare the sauce. Combine all the sauce ingredients in a small sauce pan and heat over low heat (approx 10 minutes) so flavors can develop.
- Gently toss the tofu with cornstarch.
- Fry the tofu over medium high heat until most sides are golden.
- Gently toss the crispy tofu in the sauce. Serve over rice, with veggies of choice. You can also add chopped green onions (chives) and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Hope you enjoy!
Notes
This recipe is also great with chicken. Cut chicken into bite sized pieces, toss in corn flour, and cook until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
